Religious Education Programs (REP)

Religious Education For Children

Our parish seeks to help all parishioners know Jesus’ love and grow in faith. REP programs strive to offer participants new insights into the message of Jesus, experiences of Christian Community and awaken a call to Gospel service.

Our intent is to conduct all of our activities in a prayerful, Spirit-filled and loving manner.

Preschoolers ages 3, 4 and 5
The program is offered during the 10:30am mass in the Notre Dame Building. The teacher will work with the little ones teaching them about God and using a pamphlet series called “Seeds”. The cost is $10 per child and registration forms will be on line or e-mail mrobers@stmb.org.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word
During the 10:30am mass, we offer Children’s Liturgy of the Word for ages kindergarten to 8 years. This program presents the readings of the Mass to the children in a language that they understand. The children will be taken down to Heim Hall and they will return right before the Offertory.

Religious Education for Grades 1 thru 5
Comprehensive weekly program supports parents in the faith formation of their children. The children meet from 9:15 to 10:15am with their catechist on Sunday mornings from September through April. Our only requirement is that a child must attend a full year of first grade before they can receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.

Religious Education for Middle School Students (6, 7 and 8)
This year we are starting a new program for our middle school (6, 7 and 8 grades). Every other Sunday evening we will join Life Teen for the 5:00pm. Mass at St. Charles. After Mass the middle school students will have their own program consisting of snacks, large group and then small group discussion until 7:30pm. All teachings will be in accordance with the Catechism of the Catholic Church.  On the other two Sundays they will be required to attend the Sunday morning sessions from 9:15 to 10:15am. Registration forms for Grades 1 thru 8 are available online, in the rectory office, in the back of church or e-mail mrobers@stmb.org.

Reconciliation Preparation
St. Mary School (SMS) and REP students prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in second grade prior to First Eucharistic. A parent meeting is held to pass on information and materials that the parents will need in helping to prepare their child at home. There is a parish rite of welcome for all First Reconciliation families. The actual celebration of this sacrament takes place in February.

Eucharistic PreparationFirst Communion
SMS and REP students prepare for First Eucharist in the second semester of second grade. We want children experiencing First Eucharist to have a complete understanding of what it is they are receiving, thus preparation for First Eucharist starts the year before they are to receive the sacrament. Parents should have their children enrolled in Faith Formation classes by 1st grade. There is a parent meeting at which information regarding the celebration of the sacrament and instructional materials are given out. Parents are expected to work at home with their children to support the instruction that takes place in the grade school and REP classes. A parish rite of welcome for First Eucharist families is celebrated at a weekend Mass to officially begin the preparation time. The celebration of First Eucharist takes place on the first Sunday of May.

High School Grades 9, 10 and 11
High school students are involved in the Inter-Parish Youth Ministry (Life Teen) with students from St. Mary, St. Charles, and St. Joseph. St. Charles’ campus is used for those sessions. The curriculum is based on archdiocesan guidelines. The format is a large group presentation followed by small group discussion. For more information, contact Jim or Kathy Martin at Triparishlifeteen@gmail.com.

Confirmation Grade 11
Sacramental preparation emphasizes the commitment that young people need to make to follow Jesus in a life-long way. Candidates participate in parish and community service.

Retreats
Retreats are an important part of every high school student’s faith formation. Day-long and overnight retreats are conducted throughout the year for all students. Confirmation students go on a weekend retreat.
